How to scan a document to PDF with your phone
Updated October 25, 2026
Turn a photo of a paper document into a flat, readable PDF page, using your phone camera or a webcam.
You don't need a scanner
A modern phone camera captures more detail than most office scanners. The problem with a plain photo is the angle: the page looks like a trapezoid, with shadows and a background around it. PDF One's scanner corrects the perspective so the page becomes a straight rectangle, and can boost contrast so text is crisp.
Step by step
- Open PDF One and choose the Paper Scanner tool.
- Take a photo with your camera or webcam, or pick a photo you already took.
- Drag the four corner handles onto the four corners of the paper. Zoom in for precision if needed.
- Choose a look: Original colour, Grayscale, or Crisp B&W for text documents.
- Click Flatten Perspective & Add Page. The straightened page is added to your document.
- Repeat for each page, then Save a copy to create a multi-page PDF.
Getting the best scan
- Place the paper on a dark, plain surface so the edges stand out.
- Use even daylight or a bright room and avoid your own shadow over the page. Turn off the flash if it makes a glare spot.
- Hold the phone roughly above the page. The scanner can fix a tilt, but a very steep angle loses sharpness at the far edge.
- For receipts and faded print, Crisp B&W gives the most readable result.
Make the scan searchable
A scanned page is an image. To search it, copy text from it or fix a word, run text recognition next. See how to edit text in a PDF.
Private by default
Scanning apps often upload your photos to process them in the cloud. In PDF One, the camera feed and the photos are processed in your browser and never recorded or sent anywhere. That matters for IDs, payslips, medical letters and anything else you would not want copied to a stranger's server.
